Israel and the United States launched a large-scale military attack on Iran on February 28, and on March 1, Iranian state media announced the death of Supreme Leader Khamenei.

Since Iran established its current system following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, only two individuals have served as supreme leader—the office that holds ultimate decision-making authority over national affairs: the first was Ayatollah Khomeini, the founding father of the Islamic Republic, and the second was Khamenei, who became supreme leader in 1989 after serving as president.

As a result, Iran’s future trajectory has become extremely uncertain.

It is widely known that Iran’s state religion is Shia Islam.

However, media coverage has not adequately explained the ideology underpinning the system centered on the supreme leader.
