I’ve discussed the specific challenges overtourism poses to Japan and the limitations of current solutions.

Through deliberations within government advisory bodies, and more importantly, by listening to the voices on the ground, I’ve become acutely aware of how perilous the “do nothing” option is for Japan’s future.

While some countries and local governments have implemented resident-only discounts driven by local movements, widespread adoption across Japan would be time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Crucially, it wouldn’t address the root cause of overtourism.

So, how do we confront this complex issue effectively?
