Rumors had been circulating that Japan would be struck by a major disaster on July 5.

 

While these rumors, said to have originated from a manga artist’s so-called prophetic dream, lacked any credible basis, they nonetheless caused minor economic disruption—such as a decline in tourist arrivals from Hong Kong.

 

The real risks to the Japanese economy, however, are tied to two events unfolding from this week onward.
