Yesterday, I summarized developments toward a ceasefire in Ukraine since the formation of the second Trump administration.

From these developments, three points appear clear:

1. “cutting losses” in the Ukraine war,

2. Negotiations with both Russia and Ukraine (and President Zelensky’s failure to respond), and

3. The exclusion of Europe at the ceasefire stage.

This position signals a shift from the eastward expansion of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) that the United States has pursued since the end of the Cold War.

Indeed, President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth have both explicitly described Ukraine’s potential NATO membership as “unrealistic.”

Today, I would like to examine Zbigniew Brzezinski’s strategy behind NATO’s eastward expansion, alongside the current Trump administration’s foreign policy.
