February 24 marked the third year since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

A G7 leaders’ video conference was held to coincide with this date, with Donald Trump participating from the Oval Office alongside visiting French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump commented on his social media platform Truth Social, stating that the Ukraine war “would have never started if I were president.” He added that ” Everyone expressed their goal of seeing the War end” and that “negotiations (between the U.S. and Russia) are proceeding very well!”

However, at the UN special meeting on the Ukraine situation also held on February 24, both Russia and the United States voted against a resolution demanding “immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal” of Russian forces. (Ninety-three countries, including European nations and Japan, voted in favor; 18 voted against; and 65, including China and India, abstained.)

While the Trump administration advocates for a ceasefire, it now appears to be leaning closer to the Russian side.

Japanese media criticizes the U.S. stance as seemingly ignoring Ukraine, which has been invaded. However, I don’t find much meaning in such discussions.

The U.S. is neither an international organization nor a champion of justice, but rather a nation run by politicians elected by American citizens and funded by their taxes.

Trump has been calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine since his election campaign.

We must accept the reality that election promises and national interests take priority in U.S. decision-making.

Let’s first summarize the facts.
